Phosphate and Silicate removers use aluminum oxides to accomplish their stated purpose. Various grades are available and the quality of the grade obviously determines its price and its efficiency.
Alumunim oxide has a great affinity for phosphate but a lower affinity for silicate.
This can, however, be reversed by treating the product in a particular manner. This changes the affinity from phosphate then silicate to the reverse. After treatment the ore will uptake more silicate and much less phosphate. The approximate percentages are roughly 75/25 in each case.
Untreated high quality grades uptake about 75 percent phosphate and 25 percent silicate before they become saturated. Treated ones do the reverse. They uptake roughly 75 percent silicate and 25 percent phosphate.
The treatment is a bath using a particular acid to change the affinity, then rinsing the compound with pure water to remove the acidity, then drying the compound. The reason for the price difference between the phosphate and the silicate remover is the additional treatment the ore has to undergo to have a greater affinity for silicates.
Note also that ores vary greatly in price depending on their grade and absorption capability. The lesser expensive ones that cost around $0.90 max are obviously not as efficient as the high grades that have undergone special treatments and cost as much as around $2.25 per pound (all before shipping to warehouses).
Manufacturers that use the low cost ores can obviously sell the product for less than those who buy the higher priced ones.
We do not buy the most expensive one but close to it. That is the reason our products cost a little more but your gain is in the efficiency and amount of absorption that can take place.
We typically buy Lbs 10 000 at a time of each and still have to pay close to the higher prices + shipping + packaging and labeling + labor + advertising.
The reason the two products look exactly alike is due to the fact that the acid bath that the ore is given to make its affinity greatest for silicate, does not change its appearance.
The additional treatment cost is reflected in the sales price of course.
