Update May 18, 1998

I am glad to let you know that the Final Proofs and on-disk version of the book is back on the way to me from the printer (the same one who published three of my books in the Spanish Language) and printed a number of Helmut Debelius' books.

I should receive them this week or early next.

I will then review them and make corrections if necesary and send the end result back to the printer

Next will be converting the on-disk version to HTML or PDF formats and post them a chapter at a time. I need to add some more photos and text though before I do so.

As you may have noticed the pre-pub low price has been removed and the book can now be ordered for $75.00 (vs $95.00 when it comes out). You can do so via the Thiel Tech Secure Ordering Link

I am as eager to ship it as you are to receive it as I have a large financial investment in the book already and would like to start recouping the monies invested. As it looks now, just to get back what we put in the book we need to sell at least 6200+ books. That gives you an idea of what I have invested already.

The Blues of the book were sent back to the printer who has acknowledged receiving them and has reviewed them and has made the final plates for the book to go to printing. All I am waiting for now is the scheduled date on which the printing will begin. At that time it will be possible to estimate when the books will arrive in the US and when they will start shipping.

The entire book has now been corrected and the blues are going back to the printer. We are actually using the same printer (in Spain) as the one who printed Helmut Debelius' books and also printed 3 of my books that were translated into Spanish.

My next move, besides answering mail (tons of it), maintaining the site, writing, and other activities is to convert the document to HTML to put it on the site and make it accessible to those who have prepaid for the book.

Since the book is now off to the printers, the pre-pub price will expire on Sunday nite at which time it will go to $75.00 and to $95.00 when it is on the market.

Anyone wishing to order at $55.00 should do so before Sunday Midnite.

This is the fourth update on the Status of The New Marine Fish and Invert Reef Aquarium

So far I have corrected nearly 900 pages out of 912 and 32 pages are being added to bring the book more up-to-date. As soon as the corrections are finished and progress is slow due to the very large amount of email I need to answer every day, the blues go back to the printer.

The extra 32 pages, including photos, will deal with the real latest developments in the hobby, including the use of mangrove seeds, newer types of skimmers, more about plenums and what we have learned about live sand in the last few months. This will really make it the most up-to-date reference you will have access to for a long time.

The blues were received about 10 days ago and I have been working on corrections that need to be made. This is a lengthy process and I need to combine it with answering mail, updating the web site and writing new articles, etc.

The Electronic version will be added to the site as soon as the blues are corrected and the changes have been made to the computer files. The estimated time for this is early March and the files will be placed in password protected areas. You will need to request access and have pre-paid for the book. The method used will be chapter by chapter to keep the individual files smaller.

The electronic version will allow me to even further update the book.

What I can show you is what the cover will look like and that is obviously the graphic you see here.

This is the second update

The blues are on the way to me and I expect them in on Monday or Tuesday (Nov. 10 or 11).

My next step is then to correct the blues and make sure that all pictures are in the right place and that I catch whatever typos are left or at least as many as I can. I will be sending the manuscript out to a professional editor to who is not familiar with aquariums to catch whatever I may have missed and whatever the spell checkers missed (I used two different ones so far).

When the corrections are completed the blues go back to the printer and the actually printing process starts. That usually takes about 6 weeks (including the binding).

In the interim the Electronic version will be placed on the web site and will be accessible to all those who have prepaid and request access to it. I will post to the reefkeeping-tips list as soon as the electronic version is available.

Of course, anyone who has access to the Electronic version will still receive the printed one.

Based on the information received yesterday this is the up-to-date status on the book.

Where are we with the publication of the book?

The NMFIRA is 912 pages long. The format is hardcover in 6 by 9 format. The special numbered series is the same length, except that on one page the number appears that was assigned to those who bought the limited edition and those copies are signed.

All other pre-ordered books will be signed as well but will not carry the limited eidtion number.

The pre-publication price, which is still available, and can be obtained by going to our web page is $55.00 till October 1st, 97. At that point the price will go up to $75.00 and when the book is published the price will be $95.00. All prices include shipping.

Status

The book has been sent to the printer and I am awaiting the return of the "blues" so I can look for errors, typos and whatever else needs to be changed.

The "blues" then go back to the printer.

At that time the printer schedules the job.

Based on all of this we expect that the book will be out in November.

Electronic version

All those who have pre-ordered the book will have free access to an electronic version which will be placed in a special section of our web site towards the end of October. Free access will be for a limited time and I have not decided yet how long that will be. Probably 6 to 12 months.

To request access to the electronic you will need to send me Email and request such access.

Of course, only those who have prepaid will be able to benefit from this for free. This version will be updated from time to time and you will be advised when such updates occur.

A "To-be-paid-for" Electronic version of the book will be available as well some time after it has been released in hard format. The exact timing for that has not been decided upon yet.

Timing

As far as feedback from the printer goes, we are on time. They are running the blues in the next week or two and then sending them off to me. Right now they are being produced (incidentally they use lamps to do so that are very similar to what we use over our aquariums, except that they do not filter out the UV as that is how they make the plates or rather burn the plates that are used to print the book).

As soon as I have seen the blues, and made the corrections that are inevitable it seems, the electronic version will be released. I will post to the list to announce that access can be requested. The format will be in .pdf so you will need the Acrobat Reader from Adobe to read the electronic version (the reader is free and can be downloaded from the Adobe site

Reviews

As soon as the blues are corrected, electronic versions will be sent to several people who will review the book. Reviews will be placed on the web site.
